Thursday

Good evening friends!  We are winding down for the evening over here in Kenya.  Tonight we had mince meat stew over rice, sukumawiki (similar to spinach), salad, and chocolate cake.  I've watched an entire season of Duck Dynasty as I'm going off to sleep each night, I guess I'll be moving on to The New Adventures of Old Christine next.

This morning we talked about humility vs. pride.  They really understood the lesson well!  We built a human pyramid, but as we got to the top, their little backs were so small we could not fit two knees on them!

The boys on the bottom of the pyramid (including Hudson on the far left in the red t-shirt) showed great humility by serving as support without showing pride for being so strong!  After our lesson, we had some free time before lunch.  We walked amongst the children and talked with them, learning their "stories".  Today they would be having githeri (beans and maize) for lunch.  While talking with them yesterday I discovered some of them like avocado mixed in with their githeri.  I also learned that you could walk down the road about 2 buildings down and purchase avocados from a little stand for 2 KES (which is less than two cents in American money).  So, today I gave three of them 2 KES each to go down and get an avocado to mix in with their lunch.  One little guy saved me a little bit of his lunch, and was so proud to show it to me when I returned from my lunch.  I was unclear whether he was just showing me that he did it, or if he was wanting me to eat it...he ended up eating it, so hopefully he only wanted to show me.  What a sweetheart!  Speaking of lunch, here is where I eat EVERYDAY while I am in Kenya:

There are always a lot of mizungus (white people) eating at the Guava Cafe.  My waiter's name is Ali and he gets so excited when he sees me coming!  I eat french fries "chips" and drink a lemonade each day.  After lunch, we headed back to the Virginia Home for a
shortened visit as we were going to the open air market in Nakuru.  We recapped our lesson and then "served" the children Goldfish.  The children always love Goldfish!

Then Hudson played Volleyball while I showed some of the children a slideshow of all the photos we have taken so far on our trip.  I believe Walt was taking a Science quiz from one of the students, and I'm not sure where Harrison was.

Then some of the boys took me to their dormitory to show me their photo albums I've given them in the past and how they are filling them with photos.  I also saw some of the artwork the boys are doing, some of them are very talented!

We said our goodbyes for the day and headed to the Nakuru market, where we haggled and barGINNED (as the Kenyans say).  Harrison came home with a really nice elephant wall hanging made out of ebony!  The boys got to take a motorbike taxi home from the market and it MADE THEIR DAY!  Mama was a bit nervous, but they loved it!  At the dinner table my sweet wonderful boys did impersonations of their parents when they are "making a point" with them....hmmmm.  Now, as I'm heading up to bed, the fire has revived itself, so I suppose I shall stay down here just a little bit longer.

Tomorrow we will walk the property and do a punch list for some visitors from Louisiana who will be coming to Kenya in October and want some projects to do!  Wow, that's awesome!  There are SO many of you out there who have expressed an interest in coming to Kenya with us at some point.  Don't worry, I've written all your names down on a piece of paper!  Once you come here, you will be hooked!  Until then, if you'd like to help, you can contribute to their monthly food supplies or sponsor a child for high school.  As I mentioned, some of our other friends have donated the money for uniforms, so if either food or schooling doesn't spark your passion, I'm CERTAIN we could find something that would!  All you've got to do is ask me!

Lala salama for now....
