Friday

Well, today started out a bit "harried"...and literally, I was having a BAD hair day!  Isn't that ridiculous?  Here I am in Kenya, trying to do good work and teach the children about humility and I make our whole car late because I am having a bad hair day!  Oh goodness!

I took a few more photos as we drove to the Virginia Home from the town center:

And once we arrived, I snapped some photos of my favorite fashion accessories of the day:

Earlier in the week, we were asked to talk with the older children (age 14 and up) about relationships and abstinence.  Surprisingly, my boys volunteered to teach the lesson since they are their peers.  My husband Walt and I were thrilled about this!  So, today was the day.  In the morning we gathered the older boys (no girls, no teachers) and my boys talked with them.  The theme of their talk was "How to be a respectful man/woman of God".  In the afternoon, they had a similar talk with the older girls (no boys, no teachers).  I was very proud of them and their embracing of the lesson!  While they were doing that, Walt and I taught the remaining children about the humility of Jonathon as he stepped out of the way for David to become King, and he interceded on David's behalf when King Saul wanted David dead.  We used a costume to help with our illustration and we had NO idea it would be such a hit!

Meet Jonathon and David:

The kids laughed hysterically when we adorned first Nehemiah (Jonathon) and then Brighton (David) in the Burger King mask and sash!  It was really a great learning tool...who knew?

(As a side note, I am currently typing this in the dark, as the power has gone off.  Harrison is on his laptop practicing Swahili, Walt is on his iPad reading a book, and Hudson is on his phone playing a game.  It looks so funny as we are in total darkness except for our technology!)

Today we took our one of our former students, Jemimah, to the Guava Cafe with us.  She has left the Virginia Home to pursue secondary education at a nearby boarding school.  Both she and her brother Nehemiah have attended school in Virginia, but return to their home at night.

See us looking itty bitty in the photo?  Jemimah is in the very center.  As we drove back to the home after lunch, we stopped off at Jemimah's house to greet her mother Ann.  I told my family that Ann reminds me of a Kenyan "Aunt Cynthia" (my husband's eldest sister)...I had met Ann on a previous visit to Kenya and took tea and Arrowroot with her (I learned during that visit that I DO NOT LIKE ARROWROOT!).  She was SO gracious to serve me that I was embarrassed I did not like it, so I spit it out in my backpack.  During this visit we just said hello.  My family concurred:  Aunt Cynthia for sure!

The afternoon at the Virginia Home was short as we had some errands we had to do (i.e. picking up the money wire for the uniforms and bodywash for my sons)  The boys returned to the market and took motorcycle taxis home again.  You should see how happy their faces are after that!

Just a couple of extra snapshots of the day before I bid you goodnight:

Lala salama, y'all! ;)
